The skeleton Monstera, and it earns the name. "Esqueleto" is Spanish for skeleton — a nod to its dramatically fenestrated leaves, so riddled with holes they look almost skeletal, like green lacework. It's the bigger, holier cousin of the common adansonii: the leaves grow larger and longer (up to around two feet indoors), in a lighter green with a thicker, leathery texture, and the fenestrations open up from the midrib nearly to the leaf's edge. Native to the cloud forests of Costa Rica, it's a climber at heart — give it a moss pole and the leaves get bigger and more dramatically holey as it matures. It's a genuine collector's Monstera, rarer and far more striking than a plain adansonii, but nowhere near the fussy, wallet-emptying territory of the holy-grail obliqua.
